ZIRAKPUR, April 14: — In a disturbing episode of public violence, a youth was brutally attacked with swords, rods, and sticks by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Baltana in Zirakpur on Saturday. The assault, captured on CCTV, prompted police to register a case against six unidentified individuals.
According to the FIR lodged by head constable Ramandeep Singh of the Baltana police post, he was on patrol duty when he received a tip-off around 3 p.m. about an attack outside Bajrang grocery store in Baltana market. The officer, along with his team, rushed to the scene but found no one present.
Footage from a nearby CCTV camera showed a group of five to six individuals chasing and assaulting a youth. “Both the attackers and the victim appear to be minors,” police said after reviewing the video. The victim tried to fend off the assault but was overwhelmed.
As a shopkeeper stepped outside upon hearing the commotion, both the attackers and the victim fled in different directions. “There is a possibility that the youth suffered injuries. The attackers also appeared to threaten him with serious consequences before leaving,” the complainant noted in the FIR.
Police have not yet identified the victim or the accused. The FIR was registered based on the available video evidence and eyewitness account.
Zirakpur DSP Jaspinder Singh Gill said police took immediate action after reviewing the footage. “We have registered a case against unknown assailants. Investigation is ongoing, and the accused will be nabbed soon,” he told reporters on Sunday.
All six suspects have been booked under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126 (wrongful restraint), 190 (unlawful assembly), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation involving threats of death or grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Zirakpur police station.
