Ujjain, September 6: The Congress and the ruling BJP are engaged in a verbal sparring match over a video showing a woman being raped on a street in the Ujjain region of Madhya Pradesh. The opposition party pointed out that the crime occurred in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s constituency and raised hell about the “deteriorating law and order” in the state.

The police claim that on Wednesday, the woman was sexually assaulted on a sidewalk near Koyla Phatak, one of the busiest junctions in Ujjain. They said that passersby shot the incident, but no one stepped in to put an end to the crime.
“A woman came to the police station yesterday (Thursday) at around 3.30 pm and reported that she had been raped, immediately a woman officer was called, her story was heard, and an FIR was registered after informing senior officers.” Stated Om Prakash Mishra, the City Superintendent of Police (CSP), Ujjain.
According to the police, the woman mentioned one Lokesh as the offender in her report. “We immediately assembled a squad and dispatched them to find Lokesh. We were able to arrest him yesterday, Thursday, within two hours of filing the first complaint. Lokesh acknowledged to committing the crime when he was questioned at the police station, according to Mishra.
Following a medical examination of the victim and Lokesh’s appearance to the court, the accused was placed under judicial custody.
“In addition, the woman’s statement was recorded in front of the court today (Friday). The woman has confirmed in the court about the sexual incident. A video of this incident was made which also came to the police, we have taken it as evidence,” Mishra said.
According to the police, the defendant “made the victim drink alcohol, promised to marry her, and then raped her on Wednesday.”
