Pratapgarh, March 30 — A 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district died by suicide after school authorities allegedly barred her from taking an exam over unpaid fees of ₹800.
In a police complaint, the girl’s mother accused the school staff of humiliating her daughter. “School manager Santosh Kumar Yadav, officer Deepak Saroj, and Principal Rajkumar Yadav publicly humiliated her and refused to let her take the exam. Upset, she returned home and locked herself in her room. I was working in the fields. When I came back, I found she had died by suicide,” the mother said, seeking action against the school.
Police have registered an FIR under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide of a child or a person of unsound mind.
A local lawyer and panchayat member called for strict action against those responsible. “If students are humiliated in the name of education, the administration must step in. The guilty must be punished so that those running a business of education are held accountable and children receive a proper education,” he said.
