Two Karnal Cops Suspended in Rs 37-Lakh Bribe

Karnal, April 18: Karnal Superintendent of Police Ganga Ram Punia suspended two police personnel, including the former in-charge of the CIA Assandh unit, over allegations of seeking a Rs 37 lakh bribe during the investigation of a murder case in Manpura village.

The officers, identified as Inspector Mandeep Singh and Head Constable Rishi, are accused of demanding the bribe to remove names from the FIR filed in connection with the March 12 killing of Sumitra Devi. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against them.

“Both have been placed under suspension and a departmental inquiry has been initiated,” SP Punia confirmed. “A case has also been registered against them for demanding a bribe of Rs 37 lakh,” he said, adding that a DSP-level inquiry led to the action.

According to officials, Sumitra Devi was shot dead at her home by masked assailants who stormed the house of Dalbir Singh, her husband, and opened fire. While she died on the spot, Dalbir and their son were critically injured and taken to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC).

Initial police findings suggested personal enmity as the motive. Nine individuals were arrested in connection with the crime, including Attar Singh, whose father Kaptan Singh later approached SP Punia with a complaint that triggered the corruption inquiry.

The internal investigation revealed that a monetary deal was allegedly struck to shield some of the accused. The SP took immediate cognizance, ordering both the suspension and legal proceedings against the implicated personnel.
