US President Donald Trump has asked the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to cut oil prices. His argument behind this is that this will stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Earlier, while addressing the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland through video conference, Trump blamed the oil exporting countries’ OPEC for the conflict in Ukraine that has been going on for almost three years.
The US President told reporters in North Carolina on Friday that, we want OPEC to cut the price of oil. This will automatically stop the tragedy happening in Ukraine. It is a devastating tragedy for both sides. Right now it is just bullets and people are getting injured. More than one million people have died and they are losing thousands of people every week.
‘This is a crazy war,’ said Trump
Mentioning that a large number of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in this war so far, Trump said, “More than one million people have died and they are losing thousands of people every week. This is madness. This is a crazy war and if I were president (then) it would never happen. It’s crazy that it happened, but we want to stop it.”
Trump said that one way to stop it quickly is that OPEC should reduce the price of oil. “If you keep the prices high, this war is not going to end so easily. So OPEC should come forward and they should reduce the price of oil and the war will stop immediately,” stated Trump.
US President Trump had earlier said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should end the war by reaching an agreement with Ukraine. Trump had warned his Russian counterpart to end the war in Ukraine or face many sanctions including high tariffs.
President Trump, while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, said, “I think Putin should make a deal.” When asked if he thinks that Putin can be forced to negotiate by imposing sanctions on Russia? He said “I don’t know. Russia should make a deal. Maybe they also want to make a deal. I think, from what I have heard, Putin would like to meet me. We will meet as soon as possible. I will meet him immediately. Soldiers are dying on the battlefield. This bloodshed must be stopped.”
