Kolkata: The Central Bureau of investigation, or CBI, said a special Sealdah court in Kolkata that the inquiry into the allegations that the 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was gangraped is still underway, according to The Indian Express.

CBI aims at exploring all the possibilities in the rape and murder case of trainee doctor in Kolkata

Citing evidence tampering and the necessity to investigate all possibilities, the CBI requested an extension of the remand for former officer-in-charge of the Tala police station Abhijit Mondal and principal of the RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh.

After being held by the CBI for three days, both of them appeared before the court, which decided to prolong their remand until September 20.

The CBI lawyer said during the Tuesday hearing that custodial interrogation was necessary in this case and that Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol are the subject of additional inquiry concerning phone recording, DVR, CCTV cameras, and other data linked to the case.

He added that none of them was cooperating at all during questioning.

Prior to the hearing of the case, the advocates from Sealdah Bar asked the judge to deny bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol.

Additionally, the newspaper stated that the CBI lawyer also informed the court that “each and every phone call exchanged” by Ghosh and Mondal is required to be verified with the suspected calls to corroborate their versions “with a view to explore the possibility of criminal conspiracy hatched among main accused and co-accused persons, if any.”

Additionally, the CBI stated that the accused “facilitated the woman doctor’s cremation” in a rush, although the family members expressly requested a second postmortem.

CONTEXT

On September 15, Ghosh and Mondal were taken into custody in relation to the rape and murder case. Ghosh was previously detained on September 2 by the CBI on suspicion of being involved in the RG Kar hospital’s financial irregularities. The central agency has also taken three of his associates into custody.

In relation to the rape and murder case that is currently being investigated by the CBI under a Calcutta High Court order, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police.
