Snowfall in Mountains Triggers Cold Wave Across Plains

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, 30 Dec. 2024: While recent rainfall improved the minimum temperature by 2-3 degrees, fresh mountain snowfall has intensified the cold wave across the plains. The maximum temperature in the metropolis dropped to 15.4°C on Sunday, marking a sharp decline compared to recent days.

After hovering around 20°C earlier, the maximum temperature fell by six degrees, signaling a harsher cold wave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts further dips in temperature in the coming days.

In Punjab, Anandpur Sahib recorded a high of 21°C, while Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar reported a lower 13.5°C. The minimum temperature was the lowest in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar at 4.5°C, followed by Fazilka at 6.3°C and Pathankot at 6.2°C.

Several districts have received Orange and Yellow alerts for Monday, along with warnings about dense fog, which is expected to reduce highway visibility to around 500 meters.

Last week’s persistent fog eased slightly as sunlight returned today, but Sunday saw intensified cold conditions with a significant temperature drop in Adampur, Amritsar, Bathinda, and Jalandhar.

According to IMD, colder conditions are expected to intensify in Punjab and nearby states, as a five-degree fall in the maximum temperature after recent rain solidifies the arrival of peak winter.
