New Delhi/Chandigarh, 26 December 2024: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the escalating farmer unrest and the indefinite hunger strike of Jagjit Singh Dallewal.
The letter, dated December 25, called for immediate intervention to address longstanding demands, including a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
“We request your earliest attention to facilitate dialogue between the Union Government and farmer organizations,” SKM stated, highlighting growing concerns among the farming community.
Dallewal, 70, has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border since November 26, subsisting only on water. His condition is reported as critical by doctors monitoring his health. His protest, supported by farmers at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, focuses on legally ensuring MSP, debt waivers, pensions for farm workers, and justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Protests under SKM and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have continued since February 13 after farmers were prevented from marching to Delhi. Previously, 101 farmers attempted to walk to Delhi multiple times between December 6 and 14 but were stopped by security forces in Haryana.
SKM also stated that farmers from over 500 districts have submitted memoranda to the President through local magistrates, demanding her intervention to ensure meaningful dialogue between the government and farmers.
