SIT Formed to Probe Bribery Allegations Against AAP MLA Bharaj

Sangrur, March 10 — A three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to probe bribery allegations against Sangrur AAP MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj, cabinet minister Aman Arora said on Sunday.

The case stems from accusations made by a man from Phagguwala village, who went live on social media claiming he paid ₹30 lakh to Bharaj for the Bhawanigarh Truck Union president’s post.

He later alleged that another individual was given the position after paying ₹55 lakh. The man attempted suicide following the controversy and was recently discharged from the hospital.

Bharaj has denied the allegations, stating that Gurpreet Singh, whom the man claimed acted as an intermediary, no longer works for her. “I have only one personal assistant — Gurwinder Singh Chatha,” she said, adding that she would wait for the investigation’s outcome. “If justice is not delivered, I will approach the high court,” she added.

Minister Arora, who was in Sangrur’s Bahadurpur village to inaugurate a sewa kendra, assured strict action against anyone found guilty. “An FIR will be registered only after the investigation is completed. It is standard procedure,” he said.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema had earlier defended Bharaj, stating that if she were guilty, she wouldn’t have filed a complaint herself, which also calls for an income tax probe against the accuser.

Meanwhile, Arora inaugurated upgraded sewa kendras in Nagra and Bahadurpur villages, expanding access to 438 government services.

“People no longer need to visit district or tehsil offices. Punjab is also the first state to introduce online certificates with QR codes,” he said, adding that digitization efforts for sarpanch and numbardar records are also underway.
