Shiromani Akali Dal on the path of “existential crisis”

5 August, Punjab: In the face of opposition from some party officials who have formed the “Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar,” Sukhbir Badal restructured the party’s core committee, which is the highest decision-making body inside the group, on Sunday.

Reorganized a few days after Sukhbir Badal abolished the previous panel, the core committee consists of 23 members.

Among the notable individuals on the panel are Harjinder Singh Dhami, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Daljit Singh Cheema, Naresh Gujral, and Bikram Singh Majithia.

In light of the SAD’s recent defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, the rebels have been calling for Badal to resign as leader of the party. Former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, former head of the SGPC Bibi Jagir Kaur, former MLA Gurpartap Singh Wadala, and former ministers Parminder Singh Dhindsa and Surjit Singh Rakhra were among the figures who raised the banner of revolt.

The dissident leaders have established a 13-person presidium to collaborate with Gurpartap Singh Wadala, the convener of the “Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar” (reforms movement).

They claimed that the Sikh Panth should be concerned since the SAD was going through a difficult period and was experiencing a severe existential crisis. They had stated that efforts were being undertaken by the reform movement to pull the SAD out of that predicament.

The SAD’s electoral graph has been declining since 2017. The party managed to win just three seats in the 2022 state Assembly elections, while in the most recent Lok Sabha poll, where it won only one seat (Bathinda).
