SGPC Scraps Emergency Meeting on Jathedar Controversy

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar, 23 December 2024: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called off its emergency executive meeting scheduled for December 23. According to sources, the meeting was intended to revisit the committee’s recent decision involving Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.

During its December 19 meeting at Degsar Sahib Katana in Ludhiana, the SGPC restricted the responsibilities of Giani Harpreet Singh and formed a three-member panel to examine the issue. The panel includes senior vice president Raghujit Singh Virk, general secretary Sher Singh Mandwala, and executive member Daljit Singh Bhinder. Until the investigation concludes, Giani Jagtar Singh, the head granthi of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, will oversee services at the Takht.

Explaining the cancellation, SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Manan cited prior commitments of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami. “All executive members have been notified about the meeting’s cancellation,” Manan said.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at noon at the SGPC headquarters, was described as essential to address a key matter. If held, it would have marked the SGPC’s third executive meeting in just two weeks.

The SGPC’s decision to restrict Giani Harpreet Singh’s duties has drawn criticism from Sikh groups. The emergency meeting was expected to discuss the possibility of transferring the probe to Akal Takht.
