SGPC Protests Against Sahibzadas’ Depiction in Kerala School

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar/Chandigarh, December 26, 2024: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has raised objections to the portrayal of the Sahibzadas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji during an event at a Kendriya Vidyalaya school in Payyanur, Kerala. Sharing images and videos of the incident on social media, SGPC called the act offensive to Sikh principles and deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Sikh community.

In its statement, SGPC requested the school administration to prevent similar incidents and urged the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to instruct the Payyanur school to remove the contentious material from public platforms. Additionally, SGPC appealed to the central government to align national-level awareness campaigns about the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas with Sikh principles.

The SGPC criticized the naming of the day as “Veer Bal Diwas,” underlining that Sikh institutions, including the Akal Takht Sahib, prefer the term “Sahibzada Shahadat Diwas.” The committee explained that Sikh traditions honor the Sahibzadas as “Baba,” a title denoting respect for their bravery and sacrifice, rather than as “Bal,” meaning child or youth.

To address misunderstandings about Sikh doctrines, SGPC offered to assist government institutions in spreading awareness about the historical and cultural significance of the Sahibzadas’ sacrifices.
