Tarn Taran, March 27 — Sarabjit Singh, the second accused in the murder of Nanakmatta Gurdwara Karseva chief Baba Tarsem Singh, was arrested from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, a senior police official said on Thursday.
Udham Singh Nagar SSP Manikant Mishra said Sarabjit, who had been on the run since the broad daylight killing inside the gurdwara in March last year, was captured on Wednesday night. He carried a bounty of Rs 2 lakh.
While being transported by road to Udham Singh Nagar, the vehicle carrying Sarabjit overturned after a tyre burst. Seizing the moment, he snatched a police official’s pistol and attempted to flee. He fired at the pursuing officers, injuring a constable, Mishra said.
In retaliatory firing, Sarabjit was shot in both legs and subdued. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kashipur and will be produced in court soon, the SSP added. Several policemen injured in the accident are also being treated at the same hospital.
The other accused, Amarjit Singh alias Bittu, was killed in an encounter with the Uttarakhand Police’s Special Task Force in Bhagwanpur, Haridwar, in April last year.
Sarabjit and Amarjit had arrived on a motorcycle at Nanakmatta Gurdwara on March 28, 2024, and shot Baba Tarsem Singh at close range, killing him instantly.
