Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, decided to “rest” for the Sydney Cricket Ground’s last Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. When Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the visitors’ captain during the toss, he disclosed that Rohit had chosen to “rest” from the pivotal Sydney Test, in which India had an opportunity to tie the five-match series and win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In Frame: Rohit Sharma
The Indian Express reported that fresh information on Rohit Sharma’s absence from Sydney had emerged. The 37-year-old most likely played his final game for India while wearing white.
Rohit, who has been struggling for runs in Tests, is not part of the selectors’ plan beyond the Australia tour. According to the report, the right-handed batter has been informed of the same.
Even if India somehow reaches to the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which will take place at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in June 2025, Rohit Sharma is not likely to return to the Test team.
Together, selectors chairman Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir decided that Rohit Sharma will not be included in the playing XI for the Sydney Test.
Rohit Sharma struggled in the three matches he played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after missing the series opener in Perth. He recorded scores of 3,6,10,3 and 9.
At the time of the toss in Sydney, India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah said, “Obviously, our captain (Rohit) has shown his leadership as well. He’s opted to rest in this game. So that shows that there’s a lot of unity in our team. There’s no selfishness. Whatever is in the team’s best interest, we’re looking to do that.”
Discussion with Virat Kohli
Additionally, the Champions Trophy will be discussed by the selectors. When the complete squad returns to India following the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the meeting is anticipated to take place.
The Indian Express story claims that the selectors will speak to Virat Kohli about his future following the conclusion of the series against Australia.
Ravindra Jadeja, another veteran member of the team, is expected to stay in the picture, though, as his presence is appreciated throughout what is anticipated to be the largest shift in Team India’s history.
