Rain, Dust Storms Bring Sudden Dip in Chandigarh Temperature

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 17: Chandigarh experienced a sudden weather shift late Wednesday night as light rainfall and gusty winds swept through the city and its adjoining areas, pushing temperatures down sharply and bringing a taste of the 90s-style summer, according to locals.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said rain is likely to return from April 18, continuing for two days. “Cloud cover and strong winds will persist for three days starting April 18,” the department noted, adding that current patterns are reminiscent of past decades when pre-monsoon showers would often follow early heat spikes.

Last night’s brief rain spell, accompanied by strong dusty winds, caused damage in parts of the city. Hoardings, signboards, and tree branches were seen scattered across roads. Many residents reported dust sweeping into homes due to the high winds.

The change in temperature was abrupt. “The temperature was around 30°C before the rain began at 11 a.m., and it fell to 22°C by 12:45 p.m.,” an IMD official said. “Within just 15 minutes of rainfall, the mercury dropped nearly 8 degrees.”

Following the rain, temperatures stabilized around 23°C, offering temporary relief from the rising heat. With more rain on the horizon, the city is bracing for continued weather fluctuations in the days ahead.
