PGIMER to Have ICG Procedure for Uterine Cancer Treatment

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, March 11— The obstetrics and gynecology department of PGIMER is set to introduce the Indocyanine Green (ICG) procedure for treating endometrial cancer, aiming to streamline the surgical process and minimize complications.

The announcement was made during the annual meeting of the Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of Northern India, held at PGIMER on Sunday.

Endometrial cancer, also known as uterine cancer, affects the uterus lining and is primarily treated through surgery, often followed by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. According to PGIMER’s data, uterine cancer was the second most common gynecological cancer in 2024, with 118 cases out of 371 gynecological cancer surgeries performed between March 2024 and February 2025.

Society president and PGIMER professor Dr. Rashmi Bagga stated that the ICG equipment setup would be completed in a few weeks, and the procedure would begin soon.

“In simple terms, ICG is an advanced technique to detect cancer spread and remove affected tissues. It uses a dye to identify sentinel lymph nodes—the first nodes where cancer is likely to spread—allowing for precise removal,” Dr. Bagga explained.

Dr. Rahul Modi, a gynecologic oncology specialist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, noted that uterine cancer treatment traditionally involved removing the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and all lymph nodes. “Earlier, all lymph nodes were removed as a precaution. With ICG, only the affected ones will be taken out, reducing complications like prolonged surgery, blood loss, and post-operative swelling in the feet,” he said.

The new procedure is expected to offer patients a more precise and less invasive treatment option.
