PAU Launches Rapid Leaf Composting Machines for Greener Farming

by TheReportingTimes

Ludhiana, April 4: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has introduced high-tech leaf shredder and decomposer machines to rapidly convert leaf litter into organic compost, marking a major shift in campus waste management.

Vice chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal said the initiative aligns with PAU’s commitment to sustainability. “We’re turning waste into wealth by accelerating compost production and reducing environmental load,” he stated.

One-Year Process Now Takes Just 24 Hours

Previously, leaf litter from the university’s many deciduous trees was buried in pits with water—a process that took nearly a year. Now, with the new machines and microbial additives, partial decomposition occurs within 24 hours, followed by a month-long composting phase.

Estate officer Rishi Indra Singh Gill said departments of microbiology and soil science collaborated to optimise the process. The resulting compost is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients like zinc, iron, copper, and manganese. Lab tests also confirmed it is free from heavy metal contamination.

Environmental Activist Key to Project

The initiative owes much to the efforts of environmentalist Col Jasjit Singh Gill, who worked with the Ludhiana municipal corporation to bring the project to life.

“Col Gill’s dedication helped make this a reality,” said Rishi Gill, underscoring the importance of community partnerships in environmental innovation.
