Chandigarh, 9 January 2025- After the formation of Chandigarh, there used to be the post of Chief Commissioner, but on 3 June 1984, the Central Government abolished the post of Chief Commissioner and created the post of Adviser to the Administrator. Now after four decades, the Center has abolished the post of Advisor and converted it into Chief Secretary.
Politics has heated up on the decision of the Central Government to abolish the post of Adviser to the Administrator in Chandigarh. After 40 years, the post of Administrator has been abolished in Chandigarh and the post of Chief Secretary has been created. Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Akali Dal have come out in protest against it.
Senior spokesperson of Aam Aadmi Party, Neel Garg has strongly opposed the abolition of the post of Advisor and creation of the post of Chief Secretary in Chandigarh. Garg has said that if needed, he will also bring a proposal in the Assembly against it and will cancel it and send it to the Center. Apart from this, protests will also be held against it by taking to the streets.
At the same time, AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang has protested against the implementation of the post of Chief Secretary in place of Advisor in Chandigarh. MP Kang said that Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab. The city of Chandigarh has been built by destroying villages of Punjab. In such a situation, before taking any decision related to Chandigarh, the Central Government should definitely consult the Punjab Government once, but the intention of the Central Government has been from the beginning to end Punjab’s share or right on Chandigarh.
Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal has strongly condemned the decision to re-designate the post of Advisor to the Chandigarh Administrator as Chief Secretary of Chandigarh UT. Sukhbir said that this is another discriminatory step of the Government of India to further weaken Punjab’s rightful claim on Chandigarh. I urge the Center not to harm the strength and food reserves of the country as its long-term consequences can be very serious. Transferring Chandigarh and Punjabi-speaking areas to Punjab and providing our riparian rights on river water etc. is the only unfinished agenda of the 1966 reorganization of Punjab. I also warn the people of Punjab against the agreement of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann with the Center on anti-Punjab decisions.
