Murder Accused Killed in Police Shootout

Amritsar, March 17 — A murder accused was killed in an exchange of fire with police on Sunday while attempting to escape custody during a weapon recovery operation in Amritsar, officials said.

The suspect, Bishemberjit Singh, was arrested days earlier along with Sharanjit Singh from a hotel in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, in connection with a March 9 murder case. During questioning, he informed police that he had hidden the weapon in Sherobaga village.

While being taken to the location, Bishemberjit Singh retrieved a pistol concealed there and fired at the officers, injuring one policeman. “The accused attempted to flee after opening fire, forcing the police to retaliate,” officials mentioned in a statement.

The suspect sustained bullet injuries in the exchange and was rushed to the civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police have intensified security measures following the incident.
