Bhopal, 3 January 2025: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has ruled in favor of an adult couple’s right to live together without marriage, reaffirming their freedom to make personal life choices. Justice Subodh Abhyankar stated that both petitioners, being over 18, are entitled to protection from external interference in their decision.
While supporting the couple, the court emphasized that live-in relationships require more than just legal adulthood. It stressed the need for maturity and financial independence to ensure such arrangements are sustainable and free of future difficulties.
The decision came after the petitioner, a young woman, explained that she chose a live-in arrangement due to difficult circumstances at home following her mother’s death.
She informed the court that the hostile environment forced her to seek an alternative.
By respecting the petitioner’s autonomy, the court has set a significant precedent, balancing personal liberty with the challenges of societal norms.
