Mohali, April 2: —Sohana police arrested a 63-year-old man on Monday for allegedly attempting to kill his neighbors in Mote Majra village, officials said.
The accused, Avtar Singh, a former Punjab electricity department employee, attacked two neighbors with a sickle following a dispute, according to police.
The incident occurred around 5 pm on Sunday, as per the complaint filed by Gurpal Singh, 48. Gurpal told police he was heading to his fields when he saw Avtar Singh entering the house of their neighbor, Kulvir Singh, while shouting abuses and carrying a sharp-edged weapon.
“Sensing danger, I rushed in because Kulvir had recently undergone knee surgery and couldn’t move. Avtar was threatening him,” Gurpal said. “When I tried to pull him out, he swung his sickle at my head. I ducked, but my arm was slashed deeply. Bleeding heavily, I ran outside screaming for help. Meanwhile, Avtar also attacked Kulvir before fleeing.”
Both victims were taken to Mohali Civil Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Police said Avtar had longstanding tensions with his son, who shares close ties with Kulvir Singh. “The accused resented Kulvir’s support for his son. In a fit of rage, he launched the attack,” a police officer said.
Avtar has been booked under Sections 333 (house trespass with intent to assault), 109 (attempt to murder), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 296 (obscene act or words in a public place) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sohana police station.
