Mohali Doctors Perform Robotic Bariatric Surgery on 210-kg Youth

Mohali, April 29— A 21-year-old man weighing 210 kg and suffering from pre-diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea has undergone a life-changing robot-assisted bariatric surgery at Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

The surgery, performed by the Department of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, is expected to help the patient shed nearly 100 kg over the next 12 to 18 months.

Facing severe difficulty with routine activities, the patient approached Fortis Mohali, where initial assessments revealed a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 74 kg/m² — well above the threshold for morbid obesity.

Under the clinical supervision of Dr Vitish Singla, Consultant, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, the medical team conducted a robot-aided sleeve gastrectomy.

The procedure involved reducing the stomach’s volume by nearly 80 percent, effectively curbing food intake and initiating significant metabolic changes.

“The robotic approach enhances precision, reduces trauma, and speeds up recovery,” said Dr Singla.

“Given the severity of obesity and its complications, early surgical intervention was critical for this patient’s long-term health.”

The surgery lasted around 90 minutes. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk within six hours and was discharged on the second post-operative day.

There was no need for ventilator support or an ICU stay, and anaesthesia was managed without complications.

Within 24 hours of the operation, the patient’s blood sugar levels returned to normal, and symptoms of sleep apnea had already begun to improve.

Doctors believe the weight loss will significantly reduce the patient’s long-term risk of developing full-blown diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular issues.

The case reveals the growing importance of robotic bariatric surgery as a safe and effective intervention for morbid obesity, especially among younger patients.
