New Delhi, 27 December 2024 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling it a major loss to the nation. In a heartfelt video message, Modi reflected on Singh’s extraordinary contributions to India and his resilience through personal hardships.

“Dr Singh’s demise is a significant loss for the nation,” Modi said, highlighting how Singh’s life serves as an example of overcoming adversity. “Having endured the challenges of Partition, he achieved remarkable success across every facet of life. His journey inspires future generations to rise above challenges and reach new heights.”

The Prime Minister lauded Singh’s key role in shaping India’s economic policies, especially during his tenure as Finance Minister in PV Narasimha Rao’s government. “Amid a financial crisis, he charted a new economic path for the country,” Modi said, adding that Singh’s contributions as prime minister will remain deeply cherished.

Reflecting on Singh’s time as Reserve Bank of India Governor, Modi credited him for navigating critical periods in the nation’s financial history. “His honesty, simplicity, and humility were hallmarks of his illustrious career,” he added.

Even in his later years, Modi said, Singh’s dedication to parliamentary duties stood out. “Despite health challenges, he attended key sessions in a wheelchair, setting an example of commitment and perseverance.”

Modi also spoke of his personal interactions with Singh, appreciating his bipartisan approach and accessibility. “He was deeply connected to his roots, even after receiving an elite education and holding prominent roles in government,” Modi recalled.

Conveying condolences to Singh’s family, Modi offered tributes on behalf of all citizens and later visited Singh’s Motilal Nehru Marg residence to pay respects.

Other leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda, and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, joined Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in paying their last respects.

The cremation is scheduled for Saturday.
