Kolkata, 20 January 2025- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed dissatisfaction over the life imprisonment sentence given to Sanjay Roy, convicted in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor of RG Kar Hospital. She said that she is not satisfied with the court’s decision. Mamata Banerjee said that we all had demanded the death penalty but the court has given life imprisonment.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that the responsibility of investigation was forcibly taken away from the Kolkata Police. She said that if the responsibility of investigation had remained with the Kolkata Police, it would have definitely ensured the death penalty. Talking to reporters in Murshidabad district, the Chief Minister raised questions on the CBI investigation in the case.
We had demanded death penalty for the culprit – Mamata
She said, we all had demanded death penalty (for the culprit), but the court has sentenced him to life imprisonment. The case was forcibly taken away from us. If it had remained with (Kolkata) Police, we would have ensured that he gets the death penalty.
I am not satisfied with this decision – Mamata Banerjee
The Chief Minister said, we do not know how the investigation was done. In many such cases investigated by the state police, death sentence was ensured. I am not satisfied (with the decision). The Sealdah court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment after he was convicted in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On Saturday, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah convicted Sanjay Roy in the heinous crime committed with a postgraduate trainee doctor in the hospital on August 9 last year. Judge Das said that this crime does not fall in the rarest of rare category, due to which the culprit can be awarded death penalty.
