Kidnapping Case Accused Shot While Trying to Escape

MALERKOTLA, March 14 — A man accused in the Seehan Daud child kidnapping case sustained a bullet injury in his leg after police fired in self-defense during an escape attempt on Friday morning.

Harpreet Singh of Bathan, Amargarh—arrested alongside Ravi Bhinder of Jaggowal—was shot by officers from the CIA wing of Malerkotla when he allegedly tried to flee after retrieving a pistol from the outskirts of Salar village. No policemen were injured in the exchange.

Malerkotla SSP Gagan Ajit Singh said Harpreet attempted to escape during a follow-up operation to recover illegal weapons.

The confrontation came a day after Patiala police rescued seven-year-old Bhawkirat Singh within 24 hours of his abduction. Harpreet and Ravi had kidnapped the child on a motorcycle Wednesday evening, leading to a series of police operations.

On Thursday, three Patiala policemen were injured in an encounter at Mandaur village, Nabha, where Jaspreet Singh—the main accused—was fatally shot after he attempted to flee in an SUV and opened fire on officers. The child was recovered based on information provided by Harpreet and Ravi.

DGP Gaurav Yadav announced a ₹10 lakh cash reward and promotions for officers involved in the operation.
