Khap Panchayat (union of several villages) met in Haryana to address their concern regarding Live-in relationships, Love Marriages and Same Sex Marriages.
In the Jind district of Haryana, a Khap Mahapanchayat met and demanded that same-sex unions, live-in partnerships, and love weddings be outlawed. Three hundred Khap Panchayat members from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana attended the meeting. The leader of the Binan Khap, Raghubir Nain, spoke to the group and said that although the Khap Panchayat is not against love marriages in general, it does believe that parental approval is necessary. He reaffirmed that the Khap forbids marriages inside the same gotra and emphasized that parents typically want to protect the wellbeing of their children.
The conversations emphasized Khap Panchayat’s views on contemporary relationship models as well as its stance on classic marriage customs. Even animals shun live-in partnerships and same-sex marriages, according to Raghubir Nain, who also said that these practices should be outlawed since they cause disputes over ancestral rights. He said that in order to push for changes to the pertinent laws, representatives of Khap Panchayats would be meeting with Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nain threatened to start a movement if their demands were not met and the Hindu Court Bill was not changed. To improve this matter, a committee consisting of 51 members is being formed. Furthermore, female Khap leader Santosh Dahiya denounced live-in partnerships, saying they should be outlawed since they damage the family unit and are the result of legislative changes.
