Karnataka Passes Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill

Bengaluru, March 10 — The Karnataka Assembly on Monday passed the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, which proposes restructuring the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) by dividing it into a maximum of seven city corporations. The opposition BJP protested against the move.

The Bill, tabled by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, also provides for the formation of a Greater Bengaluru Authority for coordination and supervision and extends the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s terms to 30 months.

“We want decentralization of power and administration,” Shivakumar said. “We are not destroying Bengaluru, as some opposition members claim. Instead, we are strengthening it.” He added that the Bill aims to give the city a new direction.
