Journey about a tribal woman from Katputli Nagar to meeting PM Modi

Katputli Nagar

Katputli Nagar- Katputli artists in Rajasthan belong to traditional puppeteer families who have carried this art form across generations. They lead a nomadic lifestyle, traveling from village to village to perform at fairs, festivals, and private gatherings. Their performances, accompanied by folk music and storytelling, depict historical tales, myths, and social messages. Despite their artistic contributions, these artists often face financial struggles, relying on seasonal events and patronage for their livelihood. In recent times, efforts are being made to preserve their legacy through government schemes and cultural initiatives.

In the heart of Jaipur lies a small, enchanting neighborhood called Katputli Nagar, home to a community of skilled artisans who have been weaving magic with their puppets for generations. As a filmmaker, Gurnneet Kaur had the privilege of delving into the lives of these puppeteers, and our film on ‘, The Unmute’ showcases their story.

In this vibrant neighborhood, narrow alleys, tiny courtyards, and the air thick with the scent of wood, fabric, and paint, all converge to create a world that is at once fantastical and real. Here, artisans breathe life into their puppets, which seem to spring to life in their skilled hands.

Katputli Nagar- A film coverage like never before on lives of puppeteers

We met Bimala Bhat, a trailblazing woman who defied convention to become India’s sole female puppeteer. In a tradition where women are allowed to craft puppets within the confines of their homes but are denied the right to perform publicly, Bimala shattered the mold. Her remarkable journey even took her to meet Prime Minister Modi.

Our film also features Jagdish Bhat, a visionary who fought tirelessly to secure a GI tag for this ancient art form. The residents of Katputli Nagar are not merely artisans; they are custodians of Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the puppeteers’ spirits remain unbroken. Their puppets continue to dance, sing, and recount stories that have captivated audiences for generations, bringing joy and wonder to all who behold them.

The Prominence of Katputli Art in a Royal Place Like Rajasthan

Rajasthan, known for its grand forts and palaces, has always been a hub of rich cultural traditions, including Katputli. The royal courts of Rajput kings once patronized this art, using puppet shows for entertainment and spreading moral stories. Even today, Katputli performances remain an essential part of Rajasthan’s cultural identity, showcased at heritage hotels, cultural festivals, and tourism events. The vibrant puppetry art reflects the grandeur of Rajasthan’s past, keeping alive the storytelling traditions of the region. With growing tourism, the demand for Katputli performances has found a renewed audience worldwide.

Impact of Unmute’s film

Such was the impact of the film that, after watching the Unmute’s coverage on ‘Kathputli Nagar’ by Gurnneet Kaur, Ricky Sindhu from USA decided to financially award the artisans Bimala Bhat and Jagdish Bhat. Sandhu said, “although I can’t make a huge impact on the lives of kathputli artists but a little help from my side can bring a huge smile on their faces which is all I want.”

‘The Unmute’ is committed to amplifying the voices of those who often go unheard, bringing their stories to the forefront of public awareness. By shedding light on marginalized communities, overlooked individuals, and untold struggles, The Unmute strives to foster empathy, challenge societal norms, and inspire action. Through in-depth storytelling, investigative journalism, and personal narratives, it will continue to uncover hidden realities, ensuring that no life remains in the shadows.
