Chandigarh: Sunil Jakhar, the chief of the Punjab BJP, decided not to attend the state party unit’s emergency meeting that took place in Chandigarh on Monday. The conference was chaired by the party leader for Punjab and Chandigarh, Vijay Rupani.
Sunil Jakhar, BJP President for Punjab has reportedly wished to offer resignation
This happened a few days after stories of Jakhar’s alleged resignation made headlines, although the BJP later refuted the claims.
Jakhar’s resignation was refuted by Rupani as well, who informed the media that the Punjab BJP chief was in Delhi for party-related events.
The Indian Express was informed by the state BJP spokesperson, Pritpal Singh Baliawal, that Monday’s meeting was scheduled to talk about the approaching panchayat, bypoll, and local body elections. This meeting will be chaired by Vijay Rupani ji. He added that Jakhar will reach the state in three to four days.
According to sources, Jakhar recently met with BJP national president J P Nadda and informed him that he was not interested in serving as the party’s state president.
He allegedly told the party leadership on multiple occasions in the past that if party members were unhappy with his management style, he would step down.
Interestingly, Jakhar has not denied the reports himself despite BJP officials denying that he has offered his resignation.
Sandeep Jakhar, suspended Congress Abohar MLA and nephew of Sunil Jakhar, stated, “I spoke with my uncle briefly on Saturday after reading the news about his resignation. However, he advised me to focus on my constituency and avoided talking about the matter.”
According to sources, the BJP is not eager to replace Sunil Jakhar until after the elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. If an announcement is made, it is expected to be after October 5.
Additionally, Sunil Jakhar ignored the party’s recent meetings in Bathinda and Amritsar to consider candidates for the Barnala and Gidderbaha by polls, as well as the Chabbewal and Dera Baba Nanak by polls. In the coming months, by-elections are anticipated to be held in each of these four Assembly constituencies.
