Mumbai, 20 January 2025- The main accused in the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has been arrested by Mumbai Police from Thane on Sunday. The accused has confessed to committing the crime, police said on Sunday (January 19).
While addressing a press conference in Mumbai, DCP Zone 9 Dixit Gedam said, “There is primary evidence to anticipate that the accused is a Bangladeshi. He does not have valid Indian documents. There are some seizures that indicate that he is a Bangladeshi national.”
DCP Zone 9 said, “Prima facie the accused is a Bangladeshi and after entering India illegally he changed his name. He was using Vijay Das as his current name. He came to Mumbai 5-6 months ago. The accused used to work in a housekeeping agency.”
Saif Ali Khan was stabbed by an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant who was living in Mumbai with a changed name
“We have doubts that the accused is of Bangladeshi origin and that is why relevant sections of the Passport Act have been added to the case,” Mumbai Police added.
“The incident occurred on January 16. Actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked after someone broke into his home with the intent to steal. An accused person has been taken into custody. He is thirty years old and goes by the name of Muhammad Shariful Islam Shehzad. His intent was to steal when he entered the house. The court will hear the accused’s presentation. We’re going to request police custody. Since we think the accused is from Bangladesh, the relevant sections have been used. An investigation is underway. He has some scissors that show he is a citizen of Bangladesh, and he does not have any legitimate Indian documents,” DCP Dikshitkumar Ashok Gedam, Zone-IX, Mumbai Police, told the media.
For the past five to six months, he has been living under the name Vijay Das. After arriving in Mumbai, he relocated to other nearby locations. He returned to Mumbai fifteen days ago. He was employed by a housekeeping service.
The accused was a waiter at a restaurant, the Mumbai police said. The accused, who is currently being held at the Khar Police station, was also using several names, according to Mumbai police, including Vijay Das, Bijoy Das, and Mohammed Iliyas.
Around 2:00 am on Thursday, Saif Ali Khan was repeatedly stabbed in his Bandra apartment. The actor suffered serious injuries, including stab wounds to his thoracic spine, and was sent right away to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai for treatment.
Saif Ali Khan was reportedly doing well and had been transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular room, according to the hospital administration. A 2.5-inch-long blade was removed during the successful surgery, and although Saif is now “out of danger,” medical personnel are still keeping a careful eye on his condition.
