IISER Scientist Beaten to Death Over Parking Dispute in Mohali

Mohali, March 13 — A scientist from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, was beaten to death following a parking dispute in Sector 67. The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Abhishek Swarnkar, was engaged in research work at IISER.

Police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The accused, identified as Monty, is currently absconding, and search operations are underway.

The altercation occurred on Wednesday night when Swarnkar was parking his motorcycle outside his house. His neighbor, Monty, objected, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical assault. Witnesses said Monty pushed Swarnkar to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the stomach and chest.

Swarnkar, who was already battling a severe kidney ailment and undergoing dialysis, collapsed unconscious. Despite knowing his medical condition, the family alleges, Monty continued to assault him.

Following the attack, Monty rushed Swarnkar to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident caused panic in the neighborhood, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Swarnkar, originally from West Bengal, lived in a rented house with his parents. He had joined IISER under the National Post-Doctoral Fellowship and was actively involved in research. His post-mortem is scheduled for Thursday, after which further action will be taken.

His grieving family has demanded justice, urging authorities to ensure swift action against the accused.
