Shimla, August 16: Resident doctors at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, are outraged by the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

“All culprits should be arrested and hanged as soon as possible,” stated Dr. Sakshi Sharma during a protest by IGMC resident doctors. “As long as our laws are not made strict, such incidents will continue to happen,” according to her.
For the past four days, resident doctors have refused to provide treatments in OPDs, wards, and elective operations, and they are expected to prolong their strike until the central bodies and the government reach an agreement.
The doctors are deeply troubled by the tragedy, as well as the developments that followed the horrible incident and following investigation.
“The post-mortem revealed that she was gang raped, although only one individual has been arrested thus far. The protesting doctors were then manhandled by a mob. Can’t we at least seek justice for the victim? Is our system really weak in front of allegedly politically powerful individuals?” said a doctor.
The doctors went on to say that if the hospital had appropriate facilities and security, the situation may have been avoided. “There was no separate duty room for female doctors, so she went to the seminar room where the incident occurred.” “There was also no security when the incident occurred,” the doctor stated.
Dr. Hari Mohan Sharma, president, RDA, IGMC, stated that such gaps existed even at the IGMC and needed to be addressed to ensure that such instances did not occur here. “Today, we went throughout the college and hospital with the hospital management to look for loopholes. There is a need for separate duty rooms for female doctors, CCTV cameras should be installed at regular intervals, and security should be ramped up in important areas such as the casualty ward,” added Dr Sharma.
