Chandigarh, December 21, 2024: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sent a delegation to Pakistan to assess the country’s readiness for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to take place next year. The ICC team visited key stadiums, including the National Stadium in Karachi, before proceeding to Lahore and Rawalpindi. A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official confirmed that such inspections are a standard procedure ahead of major international events.
Alongside the ICC’s review, a team from New Zealand Cricket has also been in Pakistan to examine the progress of stadium renovations and other infrastructure developments in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. The PCB is investing Rs 12 billion to modernize the venues in preparation for the tournament.
The 2025 Champions Trophy will be played under a hybrid model, approved by the ICC, with some matches set to take place at neutral venues. As part of the preparation, the ICC delegation is also reviewing security measures in Pakistan. This is especially significant given the high-profile nature of the tournament and the need for stringent safety protocols.
Furthermore, New Zealand Cricket has sent its own security team to Pakistan to assess arrangements for the upcoming triangular series in January, featuring Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa. The New Zealand delegation includes security expert Reg Dickason and Brad Roden from the New Zealand Players Association, who are reviewing the security and logistics for the series.
In a related development, the ICC has confirmed that all matches between India and Pakistan during the Champions Trophy will be played at neutral venues. This means that the two teams will not compete on each other’s home grounds. The decision, which will apply from 2024 to 2027, further emphasizes the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, ensuring some matches are hosted outside of Pakistan.
These ongoing reviews and preparations mark a significant step in ensuring the successful hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy, with a focus on security and infrastructure readiness.
