Hearing-impaired people will now be able to understand English immediately through their sign language News: Research by Punjabi University

14 May 2024, Patiala–  Hearing-impaired people, if they want to understand the news available in English language, they can click through a software and instantly convert it into their sign language ‘Indian Sign Language’. Similarly, announcements made in public places through a different software can be instantly converted into a video from which students with special needs can understand what they are saying.
Both these softwares were developed by two students in the Department of Computer Science of Punjabi University for their Ph.D. D. are made during the research process.

Both these researches from this department Prof. Vishal Goyal, who is currently also functioning as the Controller of Examinations of the University, has been conducted under the guidance of. He said that such researches are done for the welfare of the society and keeping in mind the challenges of the special beings living in the society with different limitations and capabilities which can prove beneficial to improve their lives. He said that these discoveries are the first of their kind in the world. He said that he is working diligently in this field so that work can be done for the betterment of all the members of the society. He said that in the coming time, other researches of this type will also be brought out.
Citing his research, researcher Anu Bala said that he has developed a software for the welfare of the hearing and speech impaired that is capable of converting English news into Indian Sign Language at the click of a button. He said that hearing-impaired people are able to understand this sign language. With this happening, now those people can have a direct understanding of this society by converting the daily news into their own language and can be able to establish a direct connection with the society.
Researcher Rakesh Kumar explained about his research that he has developed a software program that can instantly convert important announcements made at public places like railway stations, bus stands, airports, etc. into videos related to Indian Sign Language. is If the help of this software is taken by installing big screens in these public places, then the daily important announcements made here can be immediately translated into this language and made beneficial for the hearing-impaired.
