New Delhi, 1 January 2025: The government has initiated the process of selecting a location for a memorial in honor of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is actively engaging with his family to finalize the site. Sources revealed that officials from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) recently visited areas around the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, identifying potential spots for the memorial.
The government is discussing a few possible locations with Singh’s family, with sources clarifying that no site has been confirmed yet. “The final decision will be made in close consultation with the family,” a source shared.
As part of the plans, the Centre will establish a trust to manage the memorial once a location is confirmed, and the designated land will be transferred to it. The government has already expressed its willingness to establish a tribute to the former leader, who passed away on December 26 at age 92 due to age-related health issues.
Singh, celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping India’s economic reforms, became the center of political controversy following his passing, particularly when the Congress party criticized the decision to conduct his last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. Tensions also erupted between the BJP and Congress over both the cremation and the proposed memorial.
