After suffering an injury that ended his final CPL season, Dwayne Bravo has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Bravo hurt his groin while trying to catch St Lucia captain Faf du Plessis in the seventh over of the Tobago Knight Riders’ Tuesday matchup against the St Lucia Kings in Tarouba. Bravo did not bowl a single over after leaving the pitch in pain right away. The legendary West Indian cricket player withdrew from the IPL and international cricket in 2021.
“Dear Cricket, today is the day I say goodbye to the game that has given me everything,” Bravo wrote on Instagram. Bravo had previously declared at the beginning of the current CPL that this would be his final season. “I knew at the age of five that this was the sport I was meant to play and that this was what I wanted to do. My entire life was devoted to you, and I had no interest in anything else. You granted me and my family the life I had always imagined. I am so grateful to you for that.”
He has been working with his IPL team, Chennai Super Kings, for the past 12 months. He was also named Afghanistan’s bowling consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
“Playing professional cricket for twenty-one years has been an amazing journey with many highs and a few lows. Most importantly, I was able to fulfil my dream because I always gave you my all. Even though I want to keep this relationship going, it is time to accept reality. My body can no longer take the pain, the breakdowns, the strain, and my mind’s desire to carry on. I cannot put myself in a situation where I might disappoint my supporters, my teammates, or the teams I play for,” the post said.
Throughout an 18-year career, Bravo became the standard for T20 cricket, winning championships with the West Indies, PSL, and IPL. He also became a two-time world champion. With 582 appearances and 631 wickets overall in the format, he is only surpassed by fellow countryman Kieron Pollard.
“Thus, I humbly declare my official retirement from the sport. The winner says goodbye today. I have no regrets about my career or this choice, despite the bittersweet nature of this ending. I am excited for my upcoming chapter now,” the post said in its conclusion.
