New Delhi, 22 December 2024: In recent weeks, Delhi schools have been targeted by multiple bomb threat emails, with some traced back to students from within the schools themselves, sparking concern.
Among those targeted was Venkateswara Global School in Rohini, where a threatening email was sent on November 29. Investigations revealed that the threats were sent by a class VII student and his sister, both of whom admitted to the act due to stress over exams.
After being counseled by authorities, the students were allowed to return to their families with a stern warning. Investigations also uncovered a similar threat received by Delhi City School in Rohini, but authorities confirmed that the individuals behind these threats were not connected to the wider spate of bomb threats affecting other schools across Delhi.
Authorities have clarified that the students involved in these incidents acted independently and had no link to the recent surge of bomb threat emails that have targeted multiple institutions in the city. The Delhi Police have enlisted the help of Interpol to assist with the ongoing investigation into the broader issue.
Over the past two months, Delhi has faced a rise in bomb threat emails directed at educational institutions. On December 9 alone, at least 40 schools received such emails demanding ransom payments, prompting evacuations and extensive security checks by authorities. This uptick in threats follows a year marked by similar incidents. Between January and November, Indian airlines and airports received nearly 1,000 hoax bomb threats, resulting in 12 arrests.
The bomb threats continued to escalate. On December 14, several schools, including Delhi Public School (DPS) RK Puram, received emails claiming that “bomb vests” were involved. By December 17, around 20 schools had received such threats, making it the fifth similar incident within just nine days.
While these threats have mostly turned out to be hoaxes, they have caused widespread fear and disruption among students, staff, and parents. The need for enhanced security and vigilance in Delhi’s educational institutions has become increasingly apparent. Despite no actual explosives being found, the potential for real danger persists, demanding continued action from law enforcement and school officials to ensure safety.
