New Delhi, April 8 — The Delhi Government’s upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 recommends a sweeping transition away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles, beginning with a proposed ban on new registrations of CNG autorickshaws from August 15 this year, officials said on Monday.
“No fresh CNG autorickshaw permits will be issued or renewed after August 15. Only e-auto permits will be granted from that date,” an official familiar with the draft said. Existing CNG autos over 10 years old will either need to be replaced or retrofitted with electric batteries under the policy’s mandate.
The draft, which may see minor changes before Cabinet approval, also proposes to end petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheeler registrations from August 15, 2026. Similarly, all three-wheeler goods carriers using conventional fuels would be barred from registration from August 15, 2025.
In a parallel move, the policy calls for the complete electrification of garbage collection vehicles owned or leased by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, and Delhi Jal Board by December 31, 2027.
Public transportation is also a focus area. “DTC and DIMTS will procure only electric buses for city routes, while BS-VI vehicles will be used for inter-state services,” the draft notes.
Private car buyers who already own two vehicles will only be allowed to register electric cars, according to a recommendation that will come into force post-notification of the final policy.
The draft signals an aggressive push to curb Delhi’s persistent air pollution. “This policy is aimed at replacing large numbers of fossil fuel-driven vehicles with cleaner alternatives,” an official added.
The current EV policy, which expired on March 31, has been extended by 15 days. The final version of EV Policy 2.0 is expected to be notified after Delhi Cabinet’s approval.
