New Delhi, March 8 — The Delhi government on Saturday approved the ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojana,’ a welfare scheme offering ₹2,500 per month to women.
“On Women’s Day, we kept our promise. The cabinet has approved the scheme we pledged during elections,” Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said. She added that ₹5,100 crore has been set aside in the budget, and registrations will open soon through a dedicated portal.
Gupta will head the committee overseeing the implementation, while a panel of ministers—Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, and Pravesh Verma—will determine the eligibility criteria. “The portal will be live soon, and women can apply. All necessary details will be provided,” said Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood called the approval a significant step. “This government takes action, not just makes promises. The funds will be transferred soon,” he told ANI.
However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which lost power in Delhi, criticized the timing. “Before the elections, Modi and BJP chief JP Nadda assured that every woman would receive ₹2,500 in her account by March 8. The first cabinet meeting took place on Thursday, yet no announcement was made,” said Atishi, Delhi’s Leader of Opposition.
The BJP secured a landslide victory in the elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, marking its return to power in Delhi after 26 years. AAP was reduced to 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any.
