During his speech on the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha, Thakur made some statements that were omitted from the record.
There had also been a great controversy in the House over his alleged comment regarding the caste of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the discussion.
Channi, a Dalit member of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, sent Speaker Om Birla a notice requesting the ability to bring a privilege motion against the prime minister in accordance with Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure.
The former chief minister of Punjab wrote to Birla, “I hereby give notice to move a privilege motion under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha against the Prime Minister for having tweeted on ‘X’ a portion of remarks which were removed from the proceedings of the House by the Chair.”
Declaring Thakur’s Budget speech, a “very abusive and unconstitutional rant,” the Congress asserted on Wednesday that by putting it on X, Prime Minister Modi fostered a “serious breach of parliamentary privilege.”
Due to protests by opposition members against Thakur’s comments in the House and their call for a caste census, the Lok Sabha session was put at halt till noon on Wednesday.
