Chandigarh Traffic Violations: ₹22.69 Crore in Fines Collected in 2024

Chandigarh, 28 Dec. 24: Chandigarh traffic police have collected an unprecedented ₹22.69 crore in fines from traffic violators this year, nearly double the ₹10.35 crore collected in 2023. A total of 9.68 lakh challans were issued as of December 24, with a significant majority—8,28,672—generated through Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras.

“Technology has revolutionized traffic enforcement in the city,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sumer Pratap Singh. “Most challans are now issued via CCTV cameras, allowing efficient monitoring and ensuring accountability. Violators can even pay fines online through links sent to their systems.”

Under the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), over 2,000 CCTV cameras have been deployed across 267 locations, monitoring 47 major traffic junctions. A robust 250-km fiber network supports these cameras. The AI-enabled system not only detects violations automatically but also streamlines enforcement.

“AI integration gives our system a competitive edge over other cities,” said Rudesh Kumar, ICCC project manager.

“The cameras are designed to identify specific traffic offences, such as red light jumping or speeding, automatically capturing evidence without direct operator involvement. An operator later verifies the footage and confirms the violation before issuing the challan. In most cities, this process is entirely manual.”

Traffic monitoring operates continuously in three shifts—morning, afternoon, and night—each staffed with 30-32 operators, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Ram Gopal, who leads the Police Command and Control Centre (PCCC).

Data reveals that red-light jumping accounted for 4,89,382 challans—nearly half of all violations—followed by 1,45,307 cases of speeding. Helmet law violations also remained a concern, with 84,616 challans issued.

“Red-light violations are the most frequently recorded, thanks to cameras at 40 junctions specifically designed to detect such offences,” said Kumar. “Speeding violations are captured by 10 cameras, but plans are underway to expand this network.”

The city’s enhanced enforcement measures reflect a growing reliance on technology to improve compliance and reduce traffic infractions.
