Chandigarh Braces for 40°C as Heat Returns

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, April 21 — With the weakening of the Western Disturbance that brought a brief pause to the heatwave, temperatures in the city have started to climb again, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in the city reached 36.6°C — 1.3°C above normal — while the minimum temperature stood at 27.3°C, which is 6°C above the seasonal average. Both readings mark the highest recorded this season so far.

“The Western Disturbance has moved away, and heat is building up once again,” said an official at the IMD. “By the weekend, maximum temperatures could touch 40°C.”

Forecasts indicate that over the next three days, the city is likely to experience daytime highs ranging between 37°C and 38°C, while nighttime temperatures will hover around 26°C to 27°C.

While no official heatwave alert has been issued for the region yet, meteorologists said the rising trend could continue through May, pushing temperatures further above normal.

“These readings are already higher than what we typically see in April,” the official added. “The heat is intensifying earlier this year, and May is likely to be hotter.”

The recent spike in temperatures follows a short relief spell brought by last week’s active Western Disturbance, which briefly moderated conditions across northern India. Now, with its effect diminishing, the seasonal heat is regaining strength.

Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions, especially during peak afternoon hours, as the region braces for intensifying conditions.
