Bangladeshi politician found dead in Meghalaya, India

Guwahati, August 30: Ishaque Ali Khan Panna, a prominent figure in the Awami League party of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was discovered dead in Meghalaya, close to the Bangladeshi border, according to a news release issued by Meghalaya police today.

Panna had apparently left the country following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. According to police sources, the postmortem report indicates that he may have been strangled.

The semi-decomposed body was discovered on August 26 in the Dona Bhoi village of East Jaintia Hills under a betel-nut plantation, according to Meghalaya police. The distance between the region and Bangladesh’s border is 1.5 km.

According to sources, the passport he was carrying helped identify the body.

According to police sources, the postmortem report indicated that he had been strangled and that “breathing difficulties caused by choking” was the cause of his death. According to sources, the body has been transferred for forensic examination.

The body had numerous cuts on it as well. According to police sources, there were bruises and abrasions on the forehead, “which could indicate a struggle by the victim,” the report stated.

Panna was formerly the general secretary of the Awami League-affiliated Bangladesh Chhatra League.
