Chandigarh, March 16 – In a Holi crackdown on traffic violations, police across the tricity issued 4,314 challans and impounded 233 vehicles, with Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula enforcing strict measures against reckless driving and safety breaches.
Chandigarh Police issued 1,367 challans, with helmetless riding (173 cases) and drunk driving (52 cases) among the key violations.
Other infractions included defective number plates (75), not wearing seat belts (33), using tinted windows (65), and dangerous lane changing (179). Additionally, 172 overloaded e-rickshaws were fined, and 154 vehicles were impounded.
Mohali police recorded 2,927 violations, impounding 79 vehicles. Among them, 1,438 challans were issued for riding without helmets. Panchkula police, operating special checkpoints, issued 20 challans for drunk driving, speeding, and other offences.
Emergency calls in Chandigarh rose to 1,096, with 483 incidents requiring police, fire, or medical intervention, up from 446 last year. Police emergency response units were dispatched to 449 locations, while ambulances attended to 69 medical emergencies.
Fire services responded to four incidents. Traffic accidents remained nearly unchanged, with 35 cases this year compared to 36 in 2024.
Meanwhile, UT police used a mild lathicharge at Sukhna Lake to disperse Holi revelers and prevent disturbances, a senior officer said.
