by TheReportingTimes

Gharuan, 22 December 2024: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged victorious in the first-ever Gharuan Nagar Panchayat elections, sweeping 10 of the 11 wards and taking control of the civic body.

An independent candidate secured victory in the lone remaining ward. The peaceful elections were held with a strong police presence, ensuring smooth proceedings.

A total of 28 candidates contested the elections, with both AAP and Congress fielding 11 candidates each, while six contested as independents. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not put forward any candidates. Polling took place between 7 am and 4 pm, and AAP celebrated a successful first-time entry into the Gharuan local elections.

Alongside the Gharuan elections, bypolls were conducted in three wards—Ward 16 in Kharar, Ward 16 in Nayagaon, and Ward 6 in Banur.

In Kharar, AAP’s Anju Chander emerged victorious, Congress’s Neelam Rani won in Banur, and the BJP’s Vishal claimed Ward 16 in Nayagaon.

Viraj S. Tidke, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), praised the smooth conduct of both the polling and vote-counting processes, stressing the historical importance of these elections.
