Modi to Visit Sri Lanka in April to Finalize Key Agreements

New Delhi, March 15 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka in early April to finalize agreements reached during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to Delhi last year, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said on Saturday.

Speaking during a budget debate in parliament, Herath stated, “We have maintained a close relationship with our neighbor India. Our first diplomatic visit was to India, where we reached several agreements on bilateral cooperation.”

Modi’s visit is expected to include the signing of new memoranda of understanding and the inauguration of the Sampur solar power plant. In 2023, India’s NTPC and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board agreed to develop a 135 MW solar project in Sampur, Trincomalee district.

Herath credited the National People’s Power (NPP) government’s goodwill policy toward India for facilitating ongoing Indian projects in Sri Lanka. “We will remain neutral in our foreign policy without taking any sides while working to maintain national interest,” he added.

This will be Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka since 2015.
