Five states possessing nuclear weapons will meet in New York within the next two weeks, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who was quoted by Russian official media on Thursday.
Permanent members of the UN Security Council
All of the nations in the group are—China, France, Britain, Russia, and the United States—all of which are permanent members of the UN Security Council and possess nuclear weapons.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, there has been a noticeable increase in nuclear tensions between Russia and the West, which makes the meeting potentially crucial.
Russia’s nuclear strategy was modified, as announced by President Vladimir Putin last month, who said that Moscow was expanding the range of possible scenarios for when it may consider using a nuclear weapon.
The “nuclear five” said in a statement that their top priority was preventing nuclear war between nuclear countries and lowering strategic risks in January 2022, barely a month before Putin dispatched his army into Ukraine.
“We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” they said at the time.
