Attack on Hindu temple in New York ahead of PM Modi visit

New York: The Indian Consulate General in New York has severely condemned the destruction of a temple in the city and stated that it has brought the issue up with US law enforcement so that the perpetrators of the “heinous act” can be promptly dealt with.

The attack on Swaminarayan Temple in New York condemned by the Consulate General of India in New York

The Indian Consulate stated in a post on X Monday that “the vandalism of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, New York, is unacceptable.”

Melville is located in Suffolk County on Long Island and is about 28 kilometers from the 16000-seater Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a mega community event on September 22.

Online footage shows that the road and the signpost outside the temple have been sprayed with slang. After the event, the temple is scheduled to host a prayer meeting later in the afternoon.

The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security “must investigate” the attack on the temple, according to a post made on X by the Hindu American Foundation.

The utter stupidity of anyone who would assault a Hindu temple in order to express hatred at an elected official is difficult to understand. Suhag Shukla, executive director of the Hindu American Foundation, stated in a post on X that “this attack, following recent threats at Hindu and Indian institutions, must be seen in the context of that threat scenario.”
