After a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and killed, junior doctors began protesting from August 9.
At the gates of Nabanna, the protesting doctors spoke to the media after. They claimed that in order to guarantee transparency, they requested live streaming of the decided meeting between CM Mamata Banerjee and junior doctors, but officials turned them down.
Protesting doctors said in a statement to the India that they seek justice not CM’s chair
“She can leave her chair, she stated. Our five-point demand was the reason we came here, not her chair. What makes live-streaming problematic? Is the request irrational? Why the state government couldn’t have live hearings if the Supreme Court could do so,” said one of the demonstrators, Dr. Aniket Mahato.
“We continue to think that discussion is welcome. We remain optimistic that we can work things out through dialogue. We are prepared to discuss. We’ll be seated for discussions if we’re called upon. We shall not stop our agitation,” he declared.
The protesters had demanded that the CM attend the talks in addition to having the meeting streamed live online and that their team would include thirty individuals.
In response to their requests, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant promised to have the CM present when he called them for a meeting on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Nabanna. However, he had requested that they keep their delegation to a maximum of 15 people and informed them that while live-streaming would not be permitted, the events might be recorded.
A thirty-person protestor group arrived in Nabanna at 5:15 p.m. Although the government approved the size of the increased delegation, it rejected the request for live broadcasting.
In addition to Pant, other individuals who spoke with the junior doctors at Nabanna included Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty.
We’re attempting to convince them. Whether or not to live-stream is irrelevant. Conversation is essential. Talk is the only way to resolve this issue. The CM has been waiting for about 1.5 hours. There is a limit,” Pant said earlier.
They are keen on live streaming. We have everything set up to record on video. These meetings are typically not streamed live. DGP Kumar stated, “We want to have an open discussion with them.”
