Raksha Bandhan is an “important festival” for Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty, who shared a message on the occasion highlighting the significance of a rakhi or thread. Along with sharing the festival’s backstory, the wife of the chairman of Infosys also created a controversy on social media platform X among individuals who disagreed with her.
Sudha Murty’s take on the origin of Raksha Bandhan creates a buzz on social media platform, X
In a video message shared on X, she said, “Raksha Bandha is an important festival for me. A sister ties a thread indicating that in case of any difficulty, her brother should always be there to help her.”
When explaining the origins of the festival, Mrs. Murty said that it dates back to a time when Rani Karnavati’s, small and vulnerable kingdom in the Mewar, was in danger. She was at confused for what to do. She sent a small piece of thread to Mughal Emperor Humayun and said I’m in danger please consider me as your sister. Please do come and protect me.”
Sudha Murty said, “Humayun did not know what it was…he asked what this is? and the locals said this is a call of a sister to a brother…this is the custom of the land,” adding, “The emperor said OKAY if this is the case then I will help Rani Karnavati. He left Delhi but Karnavati passed away because he arrived late.”
“This idea is when you’re facing a threat or in distress, a thread indicates that somebody should come in your rescue, and it means a lot…” she added.
On the other hand, a number of users on X disagreed, claiming that the story took place in Mahabharat’s era rather than post-medieval India. Users claimed that when Lord Krishna used the Sudarshan chakra to kill King Shishupal during the events of Mahabharat, he unintentionally sliced his finger. Draupadi wrapped a towel over the wound.
Her action moved Lord Krishna, who vowed to protect her from harm. When the Kauravas attempted to humiliate and degrade Draupadi during the Chirharan episode, Lord Krishna showed up to save her when no one else could.
